9. Ultracytochemical Studies of the Compromised Blood-Brain Barrier
Abstract
Several cerebral endothelial properties can be studied by electron microscopy such as endothelial surface charge, the composition of monosaccharide residues on the endothelial plasma membrane and enzyme localization in intracerebal vessels. All these factors play a role in blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown to protein in pathological states as discussed in Chapter 6.
