The detection of specific nucleic acid species following electrophoretic separation of a complex sample may be undertaken
by the use of Southern blotting (1). Genomic DNA fragments are separated according to size by agarose gel electrophoresis following digestion with suitable
restriction enzymes (see Chapter 5).
