The skin acts as a mechanical, physicochemical, and immunological control and defense system. The efficient operation of the
skin immune system involves cytokine production and adhesion molecule expression by both infiltrating and resident cutaneous
cells, and thus depends upon a system of cell homing, based on interactions between cell-surface properties and soluble mediators.
