Agrobacterium Virulence
Abstract
Agrobacteria are soil living Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria. The genus includes two well-studied phytopathogenic bacteria, Agrobacterium tumefaciens and A. rhizogenes. Their ability to cause disease is associated with the presence of a large (about 200 kb) plasmid. The plasmid is named according to the disease caused by it. The A. tumefaciens plasmid is known as a Ti (tumor-inducing) plasmid and that of A. rhizogenes as a Ri (root-inducing) plasmid.
