For several years, immunological assays have been used to detect, localize, and quantify extremely small amounts of antigen in complex tissues The immunoglobulins (antibodies) are proteins of the immune system Their special structural characteristics allow them to bind specifically to one of many possible foreign molecules (antigens), and thereby render them inactive
